Alaska, constituent state of the United States of America. It was admitted to the union as the 49th state on January 3, 1959.

Alaska lies at the extreme northwest of the North American continent, and the Alaska Peninsula is the largest peninsula in the Western Hemisphere. Because the 180th meridian passes through the state’s Aleutian Islands, Alaska’s westernmost portion is in the Eastern Hemisphere. Thus, technically, Alaska is in both hemispheres.

Alaska is bounded by the Beaufort Sea and the Arctic Ocean to the north, Canada’s Yukon territory and British Columbia province to the east, the Gulf of Alaska and the Pacific Ocean to the south, the Bering Strait and the Bering Sea to the west, and the Chukchi Sea to the northwest. The capital is Juneau, which lies in the southeast, in the panhandle region.

Alaska is central to the great circle route connecting North America with Asia by sea and air and is equidistant from most of Asia and Europe. That central location has made Alaska militarily significant since the Japanese invasion of the Aleutians in 1942 during World War II. Alaska’s eastern border with Canada is about 1,538 miles (2,475 km) long, more than one-third the length of the entire U.S. boundary with Canada (3,987 miles [6,416 km]). Alaska’s western maritime boundary, separating the waters of the United States and Russia, was established in the Treaty of Cession of 1867 (which declared the transfer of Alaska from Russia to the United States). The roughly 1,000-mile (1,600-km) de facto boundary runs through the Chukchi Sea and the Bering Strait to a point between Alaska’s St. Lawrence Island and Russia’s Chukotskiy (Chukchi) Peninsula and to the southwest, between Attu Island, the westernmost island of the Alaskan Aleutian chain, and the Russian Komandor Islands. The boundary leaves a patch of international waters, known as the “Doughnut Hole,” in the Bering Sea. Off the extreme western end of the state’s Seward Peninsula, Little Diomede Island, part of Alaska, lies in the Bering Strait only 2.5 miles (4 km) from Russian-owned Big Diomede Island. Both Russia and the United States have shown a tacit tolerance of unintentional airspace violations, which are common in bad weather.

The City and Borough of Juneau, more  is the capital city of the state of Alaska. Located in the Gastineau Channel and the Alaskan panhandle, it is a unified municipality and the second-largest city in the United States by area. Juneau was named the capital of Alaska in 1906, when the government of what was then the District of Alaska was moved from Sitka as dictated by the U.S. Congress in 1900.

Downtown Juneau is nestled at the base of Mount Juneau and across the channel from Douglas Island.

The city is named after a gold prospector from Quebec, Joe Juneau,

A drizzly little city bordered by the Tongass National Forest, Ketchikan was once a native fishing village that has evolved and grown through its years in the logging and salmon canning industries.

Surrounded by lakes, rivers, and streams, the “Salmon Capital of the World” is an angler’s paradise. Cast a line on your own, or hop on a charter to reel in salmon, halibut, red snapper, even trout. Keep an eye out for Ketchikan’s other marine residents, which include orca and humpback whales, sea lions, seals, otters, and porpoises. Zipline between cedars over a lush forest of Sitka spruce, hike Married Man’s Trail to surrounding waterfalls, kayak the twist of waterways along the Misty Fjords, or board a seaplane for a bird’s eye view of it all.

Sitka, Alaska

The beauty of Alaska awaits. This is Sitka Discover this unique Alaskan town, where the fish is fresh, culture is celebrated and wilderness beckons steps from your door.

Sitka is a unified city-borough in the southeast portion of the U.S. state of Alaska. It was formerly known as New Archangel while under Russian rule from 1799 to 1867. Ocean View

Each of the 375 inside cabins on the Quantum of the Seas have a virtual balcony. What's a virtual balcony? It's a video of the view from the cabin if it had a balcony. This high-definition screen spans nearly floor to ceiling and provides real-time views of the ocean and destinations. The cabin in this photo measures 166 square feet, but some of the interior cabins are larger. The virtual balcony can be seen on the left side of the photo. It provides a real-time look at the same view a balcony would have. In this case, it's a view of the sea, but at other times it would be the port of call.

Dawes Glacier

Located at the head of Endicott Arm Fjord and protected within the Tongass National Forest, Dawes Glacier was originally named “Young Glacier” in 1880 by John Muir. In 1892, the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey changed it to its current name in honor of Massachusetts lawyer and statesman Henry Laurens Dawes.

Over 600 feet tall and around one mile broad, Dawes Glacier is a mighty remnant of an even bigger ice block that forged Endicott Arm Fjord thousands of years ago. Consisting of two massive glaciers and combined by a medial moraine at the middle, Dawes Glacier covers 250 feet of ice underneath the surface of the glacier.

Cruise guests are able to admire and stand in reverence of the gigantic icy beauty from the outer decks of the ship. They might even get to witness ice calving, which is when heavyweight chunks of ice fall off and shed into the seawater underneath without warning, creating icebergs.

Ocean View

Measuring 182 square feet, ocean view cabins are slightly smaller in size than balcony cabins, and have a large non-opening window rather than a balcony. The Quantum of the Seas has 148 ocean view cabins

Ocean View - Balcony

ocean view - balcony.jpg

The standard Ocean View Stateroom with Balcony is 198 square feet with a 55-square-foot balcony. Some of these rooms are square in shape, rather than long rectangles, creating a more spacious feel, and adding an extra window next to the balcony door.

Balcony cabins near midship on most Royal Caribbean ships have always been favored for what loyal cruisers lovingly call "The Hump": a spot where the ship gets wider, creating angled and oversized balconies. Quantum’s architectural design creates forward and aft “false humps” followed by cabins that are slightly recessed from those, and one true hump in the center, mostly taken up by suites. At each of these angles (forward, aft, and on both sides of the center hump), there are opportunities for balcony cabins with slightly larger balconies, including two of the three studio balconies on each side on decks 6 and 7.
